The Dutch Society for Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering is
the most important national organization of biophysicists and biomedical
scientists in the Netherlands. The Society has 450 members (1-1-2005).
The goal of the Dutch Society for Biophysics and Biomedical
Engineering is (article 3 of its constitution): "to promote the Biophysics
and Biomedical Engineering in the Netherlands". The society is organizing
activities to develop and strengthen the physical and engineering aspects
of medical and biological research. The main means are to bring together
researchers working in a common area, and to stimulate the scientific
discussion and exchange. Precursors of the present Society were the Dutch
Foundation for Biophysics (founded 4 March 1933) and the Dutch Society
for Biophysics. Since March 2000 the Society has its present name.
The Society covers a wide field of scientific interests.
It is divided into 4 'departments', which are further subdivided into
'sections'. In the sections many workgroups participate.

The annual contribution is: € 18,- (members
of the Dutch Society for Physics NNV
get € 9,- reduction
on the fee of NNV in a combined membership). For PhD students are member
at no cost during the first 2 years. This membership is transferred into
a regular membership without notice.
The amount of the contribution can be modified by the
board and/or the society's Council. The Board can give complete or partial
release of contribution in special cases. See article 6.2 of the constitution.
Members of the Society receive the Newsletter at no cost..
Registration for membership is through the treasurer,

Registration can be done through signing and posting the registrationform.
Payment of the contribution is done by check sent by the
treasurer. The bank account (PostBank) is: 121373. Use as name the Dutch
name: Vereniging voor Biofysica en Biomedische Technologie, Amsterdam.
- Scientific meetings The Society organizes
many scientific meetings with in the departments and the sections. These
meetings form the core business of the Society. This webpage contains
the up-to-date calender
of events.
- Day of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering.
Once every two years the Day of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering
is organized. This meeting, for all Society members, features parallel
sessions for each department in the morning, and a plenary session in
the afternoon.
- Prize for the best PhD thesis. The
Society has established a bi-annual prize for the best PhD thesis in
the field of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering of € 2250.-. This
prize is awarded on the Day of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering
in a festive setting. For this prize rules
have been established.
-
Travel
grant. The Society supports partial travel costs for PhD
students and postdocs for laboratory visits in favour of their biophysical
and/or biomedical engineering research, to a maximum of € 750,- per half
year. For this travel grant rules apply.
Report of trips made (in Dutch): Piet
Lommers, visit to the Meeting of the Biophysical Society in San
Francisco, US (23-27 February 2002), combined with a visit to the laboratory
of prof. Ronald Vale.
- Financial support. The Society
supports and can partly finance the organization of scientific symposia
and conferences, typically through the departments and sections.
The Society for Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering
is represented and cooperates with a number of national ans international
organizations:
- Commission for Biochemistry and Biophysics (CBB KNAW)
- International Union for Pure and Applied Biophysics
(IUPAB) (through the
CBB KNAW)
- International Federation for Medical and Biological
Engineering (IFMBE)
- European Biophysical Societies Association (EBSA)
EBSA (European Biophysical
Societies Association) is a regional organization of the IUPAB (International
Union for Pure and Applied Biophysics), IUPAB is a member ('scientific
union member') of the ICSU
(International Council of Scientific Unions), KNAW (Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences) is
an 'adhering body' of the IUPAB.
Newsletter of the Netherland's
Society for Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering
All members of the Society automatically receive the Email
Newsletter, with announcements and messages for the Biophysical and Biomedical
Engineering community in the Netherlands. The Newsletter appears approximately
twenty times per year. The paper version is since May 2001 no longer distributed.
The "Email Newsletter" are periodical short announcements
per email to the members. If you do not receive these, please send your
email address to the secretary
or treasurer of the Society.
Send your contributions for this member service to Newsletter@vvb-bmt.nl.
